On Saturday, April 30, just shortly after Earth Day, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Kissimmee will come together with Habitat for Humanity of Osceola County for an event of deconstruction, recycling, and community collaboration.
With the help of over 300 volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Habitat for Humanity will be deconstructing a closed Saturn dealership building for materials. The purpose of the event is to salvage any usable commercial material and furniture and resell the items on property at a fraction of the costs.
Community members are encouraged to visit the property located on 2184 E. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway off of the intersection of Simpson and Rt. 192 in Kissimmee Florida between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to view and purchase discounted material such as interior and exterior doors, lighting, office furniture, and more. All proceeds raised from the event fund Habitat for Humanity programs and help further the mission to create more affordable housing in Osceola County.
There will also be a clothing drive to benefit individuals being assisted by the Osceola County Homeless Roundtable. There is a desperate need for men’s clothing and daily toiletries. A discount voucher will be given for use on site or at the Habitat for Humanity Restore for community members who make a clothing or toiletry donation.
Please contact Habitat for Humanity of Osceola County at (407) 343-1900 with any further questions.Read More
Calling all Osceola Women!
Habitat for Humanity is excited to announce two great (and free!) opportunities to learn new construction skills that you can use with us for future Women Build Program projects! Lowe’s at The Loop in Kissimmee will be holding clinics at their store located at 1300 Osceola Pkwy. W. on the following dates:
Sunday, May 1
3 pm – 4pm
Hand and Power Tools clinic
Monday, May 2
6pm – 7pm
Interior Paint and Trim clinic
There are only 20 slots available for each clinic! You may sign up for one or both. Please feel free to invite friends, family, or fellow female co-workers! Please email email@example.com by Saturday, April 30 to reserve your spot. Spread the news and join us for a great opportunity to feel empowered and learn something new!
Pounding nails, drilling holes and cutting plywood are not activities that most women do every day. In fact, they aren’t activities that many women would even feel comfortable doing. Despite the enormous leaps of progress in workplace equality since the 1960s, some work environments still remain heavily dominated by men. One of those being construction.
Since the foundation of Habitat for Humanity, women have always been welcomed and included on construction sites but the Women Build program takes the experience one step further than including. The Habitat for Humanity Women Build program aims to empower women not only through the learning of new skills, but the opportunity to actively serve the devastating need for decent, affordable housing.
With training provided by the program’s underwriter, Lowe’s, women will have the opportunity to learn construction basics and use the skills on Habitat home rehab projects and Brush with Kindness properties during the event.
National Women Build week will begin May 2 and will finish May 7 with a “Sew-In” fundraiser at our ReStore from 9 am to 2 pm provided by the Cornerstone Quilters in honor of Mother’s Day on May 8.
So grab your mother, sister, friend, or book club members and join Habitat for Humanity of Osceola County for National Women Build Week. Opportunities to become a volunteer or team leader in the areas of fundraising, public relations, special events, construction, and food services are open. Call our office at 407-343-1900 to learn more about how you can change your life by changing the lives of others this Mother’s Day.
